The streamlined approach to global payments

Nicole Douglas, senior vice president with Wells Fargo International Treasury Management, is our subject matter expert on how companies doing business globally are addressing payment challenges.

Q: What trends are changing the way your customers are managing payments?

ND: Companies are making changes to the systems and the technology they use for global payments. Whether they’re integrating an ERP or TMS, corporate treasurers and CFOs are considering automating much earlier.

The teams involved in global payments are no longer only the treasury, A/R, or A/P teams. Especially in digital marketplaces and in fintech companies, product teams and engineers are much more involved in treasury type functions.

Q: How are companies adapting to the new payment systems landscape?

When a company is doing business in multiple countries, payment formats vary

ND: It’s no longer the default for a company to choose a single monolithic system capable of payments, procurement, accounting, etc. Now, a lot of companies end up with two to three solutions, because they’re seeking out the best system for any given function.

Companies should focus on systems that satisfy their critical business needs. A new solution makes sense if it delivers payments in a consistent and timely way.

A third-party solution may get you to market faster, but you may lose a bit of control. Over time, as you grow in both the number of payments and the number of countries you’re sending them to, you may extend beyond what your vendor can support, and will find efficiencies in bringing the payments in-house. It’s critical to watch how your and your vendors’ systems react to your company’s growth.

Q: How are companies dealing with the multitude of formats and communication vehicles in global payments?

ND: When a company is doing business in multiple countries, formats vary, and this complicates the end-to-end automation process. The way data is returned can be problematic. Your banking partner should be able to work with you to make sense of returned data — halting the process if there’s a problem, resolving it, and passing it through in a way that aligns with your automation processes.

Companies stress the importance of a seamless end-to-end payments process because it’s a central component of delivering the highest level of service in their marketplace.

Q: What should a company look for in a payment partner?

ND: Whether your company is doing ACH locally, or using ACH or wires cross-border, you want a standard that works across payment formats. If a payment partner isn’t operating in that standard, the partner becomes a roadblock to your company’s growth.

The technology of the partner also matters. Does the partner engage in business continuity planning? What’s the peak performance load and how will they respond in a disaster? A bank will have continuity plans in place, but smaller players may not.

The location and availability of support teams is another factor to consider. Global businesses operate around the clock, which means no disruptions to your payments chain.
